10 Benefits of Hyaluronic AcidFriday, 7 April 2017 Hyaluronic acid is a miracle ingredient, helping to give skin a more youthful, supple appearance. Found naturally in the body throughout its connective tissue, it is responsible for securing moisture and supports many areas of the body including the skin and joints. While it is plentiful in youthful skin, as we get older our levels of hyaluronic acid drop, resulting in a loss of firmness and smoothness. Applied topically, hyaluronic acid is a wonderful anti-ageing ingredient helping improve the skin’s appearance. Our award winning BRYT Boost Serum has now been reformulated with hyaluronic acid to bring a multitude of benefits to the skin:
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant – meaning it that it helps draw water into the epidermis and prevents moisture loss by helping retain a whopping 1000 times its weight in water within the cells of skin. When applied topically, it creates a protective barrier, locking in moisture and helping to give the skin a more youthful appearance.
Hyaluronic acid is known for its ant-ageing properties. As we get older, our skin loses the same ability to retain moisture as it does in youthful skin – meaning that it loses firmness and suppleness. Hyaluronic acid’s ability to hold in water means that it helps plump the skin and smooth out wrinkles.
Unlike other “wonder” ingredients, hyaluronic acid penetrates deep down into the skin’s dermis, boosting its elasticity and hydration, and improving its look and feel.
While the “acid” in its name may lead you to think that it’s a harsh or irritant ingredient akin to glycolic acid or other AHAs, hyaluronic acid is actually very gentle and can be used on even the most sensitive of skins. Even more, its calming, hydrating effects actually help reduce dryness, itching and burning of the skin.
Originally discovered in 1934 by German biochemist Karl Meyer, hyaluronic acid has been extensively researched and scientific studies have shown that it improves skin hydration, increases skin smoothness, stimulates production of collagen, works as an antioxidant, and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. That’s one hard-working miracle ingredient!
Hyaluronic acid is often described as a “smart nutrient” because it can regulate the amount of moisture that it retains based on the humidity – ensuring that it absorbs the optimum level of moisture that the skin needs, and no more (as too much moisture would be damage the skin’s surface by causing key substances to break down).
UVB rays burn the superficial layers of your skin, which can cause irritation in the short term and sunspots and wrinkles in the longer term. Applying hyaluronic acid topically to the skin can help protect against these harmful rays.
Hyaluronic acid is a potent antioxidant, providing defense against environmental damage and free radicals and signalling the skin cells to repair damage.
Due to its ability to keep damaged tissue moist and its natural calming properties, hyaluronic acid provides sunburn relief and is beneficial in treating sores and wounds.
Hyaluronic gained renown when a journalist visited Yuzuri Hara, a village in Japan, to find out why people in their 80s and 90s had wrinkle-free skin, flexible joints and high activity levels – it turned out that it was due to a diet rich in soya and tofu, both of which contain molecules similar to oestrogen which send signals to the cells to produce more hyaluronic acid. So to get even more skin benefits from hyaluronic acid, try incorporating more of these foods into your diet – think yummy tofu stir fries & curries, miso soup, edamame beans, and soya milk on your cereal to try to up your intake!
