The Importance of Antioxidants in Skincare

Monday, 31 July 2017

Your skin is the body's largest organ and responsible for protection, regulation and sensation - it is vitally important to take care of it and make sure that it is in tip top shape and able to function as effectively as possible. When the skin is exposed to environmental elements such as UV, pollutants, smoke and chemicals, free radicals in the air oxidise the skin, causing a chain reaction which will eventually destroy skin cells. This is where antioxidants step in, neutralizing the free radicals and stopping or slowing this process.

The body produces its own antioxidants which destroy the majority of free radicals, but the older we get the harder it is for our cells to neutralise free radicals fast enough, leading to the ageing of the skin. The use of antioxidant ingredients in skincare helps to assist the skin cells in neutralising free radicals, bringing a multitude of benefits from calming inflammation, increasing circulation, reducing uneven skin tone, brightening dull skin, and repairing sun damage. Antioxidants are vital for skin regeneration and for naturally protecting the body against infrared toxin damage (the light from the sun which damages our skin and causes premature ageing).

There are thousands of antioxidants with many different functions, but these are some of the key compounds and the ones which are found across the BRYT Skincare range -

Vitamin E - is one of the antioxidants most commonly used in skincare products, and is available in both natural and synthetic forms. Vitamin E is more potent in its natural state (as it is in the BRYT Skincare range) and lasts longer in skin than the synthetic version. It protects the skin from outside elements and is often used in sunscreens (we use it in the BRYT Day Moisturiser SPF15) because of its use in defending the skin from UV light exposure.

Vitamin C - a potent antioxidant which is useful in helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dullness and uneven skin tone. Research shows that it preserves the skin's resiliency, making it firmer and smoother, and brightening dull skin. It is also an effective calming and hydrating ingredient, helping the skin better withstand the environment's daily impact.

Resveratrol - is what's known as a "polyphenolic" antioxidant, and is found in red fruits such as red blueberries, cranberries, red grapes (and yes, that means red wine too!), as well as nuts. This powerful antioxidant helps protect the skin's surface, halting negative environmental impact on the skin, and brightening tired and dull complexions. It also works by calming the skin to reduce redness.

Retinol - is the technical term for Vitamin A, and is powerfully effective for a whole range of skin concerns - from uneven skin tone, bumps and enlarged pores, to fine lines, wrinkles and skin dullness. Retinol improves the skin's resilience, bringing increased firmness and youthfulness, and is a real "anti-ageing hero" antioxidant.

Green tea - research shows that tea (green, black and white), have powerful anti-ageing properties both when applied topically and consumed. Green tea contains a compound called epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG) which gives it its antioxidant strength and protects the skin from harsh environmental impact. It also has a calming effect, reducing and soothing redness.

Importantly, antioxidants increase in strength and effectiveness when combined. This is why the entire BRYT Skincare line combines a range of potent antioxidants which work together to neutralise free radicals and bring visible results, improving the skin's surface and protecting it from harsh environmental impact.
